Community Land Trusts 2010

THE VENUE

CLTs 2010 will be held at Savoy Place in the centre of London. The home of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, it is close to the world-famous Savoy Hotel and offers spectacular views of the Thames, from St Paul's to the Houses of Parliament. It is a short walk from Charing Cross rail and tube stations and Embankment tube.

The building was designed by Stephen Salter and H Percy Adams as an examination hall for the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Surgeons. The foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria and the building was completed in 1889.

The building was acquired in 1908 by the Institution of Electrical Engineers, which spent £20,000 on improvements - including lining the entrance hall with marble and decorating it with bronze friezes.

The history of the area dates back to Saxon times, and the Vikings made it their settlement - reflected in the name of the nearby St Clement Danes church. Savoy Place takes its name from Italian merchants from Savoy, who made the neighbourhood their home in medieval times. The site also housed John of Gaunt's palace, ransacked and destroyed during the poll tax riots of 1381.

Today it offers state of the art conference facilities. Full details are at www.savoyplace.co.uk and you can find directions from the website.
